I'm Maori. I'm a Kiwi. I'm passionately proud of our country. It has always been an enormous privilege for me to pull on the black jersey with the silver fern - in 16 years representing New Zealand I never took that moment for granted. For me, the black jersey was motivating and inspiring - each time I wore it I was deeply aware of its history and meaning, which meant I knew I could perform to the best of my abilities with this whakapapa cloaking me. I want our flag to have the same impact for all New Zealanders. It needs to represent our country - our past, and more importantly our present and our future. It should speak volumes of our uniqueness in this world, of our combined heritage and where this is unlimited potential is going to take us as a country. I want New Zealanders to feel that fresh sense of motivation every time our flag is raised. It's time to change New Zealand's flag.
